Selling a mix of physical and digital products on Shopify is becoming more common. If you haven’t dealt with this in the past, you may be wondering how to mark products as digital.
To mark a product as digital, simply go to your product page in Shopify, scroll down to the “Shipping” section, and uncheck the box that says, “This is a physical product”. This will tell Shopify not to send the shipping email and allow your customer to checkout without shipping.

Why mark products as digital?
When you mark a product as digital, it will tell Shopify a few things:
- Ask the customer for a shipping address at checkout
- Will not send a shipping or fulfilment email to the customer, only an order confirmation email
- It will allow the DDA app to fulfil digital products on your orders automatically and leave physical unfulfilled
How to do it
Remember that if you are using variants, you will need to do the following steps inside each variant.
1. Navigate to your Shopify product page
As with most modifications, marking a product as digital starts with logging into your Shopify dashboard.

2. Click on your product
Once you’re on the Products page, you can add new products or edit existing ones.
If you’ve decided to eliminate the physical aspects of a product and offer it as a digital-only product, you can edit it from here.
3. Uncheck “This is a physical product”
This will stop the Shopify physical shipping emails from sending with digital products.
Scroll down until you see the Shipping” section.
- New stores: enable the “Digital product or service” option.
- Older stores: You will see a checkbox saying, “This is a physical product” – uncheck this box. (If using variants, this option will show inside the variant edit tab).
Newer stores show this:

Shopify have been recently upgrading some features and some stores may show the old version.
If the option “This is a physical product” is enabled, that tells Shopify that it is physical, and you will need to provide tracking information to fulfil the product on the order. Therefore the DDA app will not fulfil the product when it is ordered.
