What Is Shopify Compare at Price? + How To Use It

Running discounts on your Shopify website is a great way to get both price-conscious and high-spending shoppers to look at your product listings. The easiest way to have a sale is to use Shopify’s compare at price feature.

Shopify’s “Compare at price” shows the discounted value of the product alongside its original cost. It highlights the price difference of products during a sale or special event. Shopify requires initial and discounted costs to display the “Compare at price” values on your store.

In this article, I’ll help explain Shopify’s “Compare at price” feature. You’ll also learn how to set discounts for a single product, a product variant, and multiple products.

Shopify “Compare at price” explained

Before showing how to set a discount for a product, let’s first understand Shopify’s compare at price.

If you’ve seen discounted products on Amazon or any other e-commerce platform, you would’ve noticed the product page displays two prices:

  1. The price
  2. The price of what the product used to be before the sale

Here is how it looks on Shopify:

  • Compare at price – this shows the original price of the product from before the sale price
  • Price – this shows the price of the product that it is selling for

It shows the percentage of discount along with the discounted price. Below this value, you’ll see the original cost of the product.

Shopify’s “Compare at price” is the same as what you see on Amazon. It shows the sale price of products on your website. Rather than only displaying the discounted value, consumers also get to see the original value of the products.

Why show both prices?

How is this helpful? Consumers can compare the two prices and gauge the deal’s value

Due to a phenomenon known as anchoring bias, consumers will make a decision based on the discount price.

How to set Shopify’s “Compare at price” for your products

Great, now that you know what this feature does, let’s get started on how you can use it on your website.

For a single product

If you only want to run a discount for one or a handful of products, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Shopify dashboard, click on “Products” in the left sidebar.
  2. Click on the product that you want to reduce the price of.
  3. Navigate to the “Pricing” section.
  4. Copy and paste the price from the “Price” to “Compare at price“.
  5. Enter the new discounted price in the “Price” box.
  6. Select “Save” located on top of the screen.

Note: Shopify will only show the discounted value when you enter the price and compare at price values. Additionally, if you forget to save, the platform will inform you that you’re about to leave the page without saving the change.

For multiple products

If you have several products you want to be on sale, it can be cumbersome to find each one and set the compare at price individually. Fortunately, Shopify makes it easy to batch edit multiple products and change their values from a single page. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. From Home, select “Products” from the left sidebar.
  2. On this page, there’s a small checkbox next to each product. It’s located to the left of the product image.
  3. Select all the products that will be part of the sale.
  4. Select “Edit Products
  5. It opens up a page with all the selected products. Change the “Compare at price” for all the products.
  6. Click “Save“, which you’ll find in the top right corner of the screen.

For product variants

You can set discounted values for each option if your products have variants, such as different colors and sizes. Here are two ways to change the sales price.

Single product variant

You can follow these steps when you only have to change the compare at price for a single product variant.

  1. Go to your product page in Shopify
  2. Scroll until you find the “Variants” section on the product page.
  3. Select “Edit” on a variant to open up a page about all the product variants.
  4. Copy and paste the price from the “Price” to “Compare at price“.
  5. Enter the new discounted price in the “Price” box.
  6. Click “Save“.

If you’d like to change the “Compare at price” for more than two product variants, all you need to do is follow the step above for multiple products. It works the same way.

Final thoughts

With Shopify’s compare at price, you can easily run sales for single or multiple products. While this is a great feature to get the attention of your target audience, use it wisely as you don’t want consumers to associate your brand with only discounts.
